Dirt Delivery Day

Now that our raised beds are built all we need is the soil.  Our friends, the Kamps, told us where they get their soil and you can buy it in bulk so it is cheaper (and they have a militay discount!)  So last week we ordered it from Cedar Grove Composting.
We ordered the Vegetable Garden Mix, which is 33% compost, 33% sand and 33% sandy loam.  Sandy loam is a mixture of sand, silt and clay.  It is measured by yards and we ordered 3 yards.  They have a cool calculator on their website where you enter the size of your beds and it tells you how much to order.

The delivery truck was here bright and early at 7:45 am.  They just unload it where you tell them so we had it dumped on our driveway.  It was raining so I put a tarp on it to try to keep it from getting soaked.

We have never owned a wheelbarrow so this was a great time to purchase one!
First we laid down a weed guard to try to keep the weeds down.  Then came the transporting of the dirt.  Darrick and the boys worked all afternoon shoveling, loading the wheelbarrow, dumping and leveling it out.  It looks great!  The next sunny day, we can put our veggie starts in!

Our Plant Starts

Just wanted to show you how our vegetable starts are doing!

Who knew you could have so much fun with sheets!

Racoons

The other day we had a beautiful warm afternoon so the kids and I took the chicks outside so we could all enjoy the sun.  We heard some noise in the trees on the side of our yard and it was then that Jacob spotted two racoons.

We have only seen one since we moved here and that was about 2 weeks ago.  They came really close to us and did not seem too afraid.  I am so glad that Darrick put a secure roof on the coop because I am sure these two racoons would enjoy 3 little chicken snacks!

Side of our house

BEFORE
On the side of our house we have a long gated area that we have not done anything with.  It was getting weeds and moss was all over the sidewalk.  There is a rosebush that we transplanted there that we are hoping we will come back to life when summer comes around.

So when I saw some Primroses on sale this week for $.99 I thought I should get some and try to make this side of our house look nice.

AFTER
I think it turned out nice.  Today Darrick also spent some time power washing the moss off the sidewalk.
