Family Fun

Hello it is Darrick again. Jenn is not feeling well so I am doing tonight's daily update. Today we had the change of command that I mentioned yesterday and then we got to go home early. It was nice, I was home by noon. So we went to the field near by and flew our balloon rockets, pumps with long skinny balloons to fill with air and let go of, parachute men and our kite. Well now we don't have a kite because the string broke and the kite went over the trees and the other side of the trees is the bay. While I was winding up string that used to have a kite at the end Jenn noticed Micah had a rash on his chest and back and he said it was itchy. It was little white bumps. We came home right away and gave him a bath. It seemed to go away so we are not sure what it was that caused it, maybe the grass. Then I went to soccer practice. When I got home we had a yummy dinner and put the boys to bed. Then Jenn and I watched Survivor. Almost immediately after Survivor Dave and Laura called and we got to talk to them which was really nice because we miss them. That is our exciting day I sure enjoyed being able to spend some time with Jenn and the boys.

No bike ride home

Hello everyone this is Darrick. Jenn thought it would be nice for me to write tonight. I rode my bike to work this morning but we had Bible study tonight so Jenn picked me up from the ship so I did not ride home. In case you don't know it is an 8 mile half hour ride to work. It is a good way to start my day. Sometimes I am really tired for my ride home but it is good because I get to unwind before I get home.

At Bible study tonight we talk about being disobedient and being obedient to God. We took a look at our marriages and used them as an example. I really think we found the right Encouragement group for us.

Onboard the Hopper we are getting ready for a new Captain. We are having the Change of Command tomorrow so this week has been full of painting and getting ready for the big ceremony. A lot of people are looking forward to the change and hope that the new Captain will be a positive change rather than a negative one.

Jenn and the boys stayed home today until they came to get me. I am trying to figure out a way to try surfing. There is a guy on the ship who is willing to take me and has different boards but it is hard to find a good time. Maybe Friday because I am suppose to get off early. This weekend we will be going to my soccer games. Yup games we have one at 1300 and one at 1500. 1 and 3 for you non military types. We did not have a game last weekend because we were gone so we are making up for it this weekend. Then on Sunday we will go to Anuenue and they will have a church meeting after to discuss the Church's future and get some thoughts from the congregation. Then we are going to a friend from work and his wife's house to hang out a little. They are Walt and Tiffany. Jenn and I hope to bring them to Church with us sometime. Until next time peace

Grumpy Day

Have you ever woken up in the morning feeling grumpy? Well that is me today, and normally that is fine and I can deal with it, but the boys were grumpy too, which made for a rough day. The boys went to bed early and I am planning on going to bed early too.

Darrick made it safely back to Pearl Harbor from Maui but he has duty today so we will not see him until tomorrow after work. He had a nice time in Maui. He visited the Hard Rock Cafe and did some general sight seeing. Another day he went snorkeling and tried spear fishing but he did not get anything. When he was snorkeling he saw a sea turtle and an octopus! He said they saw a lot of whales from the ship which was really cool!

Hopfully tomorrow will be a better day!

Happy Easter

Happy Easter Everyone! We had a great day, even though I was really missing our friends and our usual Gutierrez side family gathering. It was especially hard since it was our first holiday away from home and Darrick is underway.

We invited our neighbor Tonya and her 3 kids to church with us (her husband is underway too). They came and we had a nice service. After church there was an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids.

In the afternoon I invited Tonya, her kids and another Navy wife, Tiffany, and her kids, over for an Easter lunch. Tiffany's husband is on Darrick's ship. It was nice that we could all be together instead of alone.

After a long day, all I had to do was give the boys a bath and get them to bed. On my way to the bathroom I stopped in my room to close the mini blinds and there he was-the gecko! I have not seen him for days and there he was in my bedroom!

So the boys and I began Operation Gecko! We got flashlights, plastic bowls and sticks. We were ready. He was so fast and ran from the window, behind my bed! I was determined to get him. We moved our heavy bed and with me on one side and Micah on the other we tried to get him. He just ran from side to side and then he was gone! We couldn't find him anywhere! I was mentally preparing to sleep on the couch because I did not want him sneaking in my bed.

We tried to pull the bed farther from the wasll and could not see him at all. We used the flashlight. Micah said "Hey mom, maybe he changed colors like we read in our devotion book!" and sure enough there he was, He had changed the color of the carpet. He was white before.

He ended up running back to the window and then jumped down to the floor and under the bed. I put a bowl on him but when I checked he ran out. I got him under the bowl again and we slid it all the way to the front door and set him free. We all gave each other high fives and Micah said "Now go find your family!" I'm just happy I can sleep in my bed tonight in peace!

Super Glue

I feel really tired tonight...

It is hard for me when Darrick is gone on the weekends, the time goes so slow, but the boys and I try to keep busy.

We went to Price Busters today. It was a new store for us and I wanted to check it out. It is like a Big Lots or Pic n Save. Then we went over to KMart. The trip was getting a little long for the boys so I bought them each a "Sticky hand". I played with them growing up. If you don't know it is a sticky rubbery hand that when you fling it, it sticks to things.

Well, as with all cheap toys bought to appease the boys, it broke. Micah's broke but not Jacob's. So being the Super Mom the boys think I am, who can fix anything, I glued it with super glue and it worked. Micah was so happy. But a few hours later it broke again.

I told him it was broken and couldn't be fixed, he looked so disappointed. After I got the boys to bed, I saw the sticky hand laying on the counter and felt I should give it another try and surprise Micah in the morning.

This time I thought I will smother it in super glue. Well you can guess what happened, within seconds my fingers were covered in super glue and I was stuck to the sticky hand! I started to panic and ripped my fingers apart and off of the sticky hand, losing some skin in the process. Seven of my ten fingers had a thick rough layer of super glue on them.

When I later took a shower and washed my face with my hands, it felt like sand paper and hurt so bad. So tonight I am very slowly peeling the glue off of my fingers.

One thing I can say about super glue, it sure works good. Hopefully it will work that well on the sticky hand this time!

Good Friday

Today has been an emotional day for me. It is gloomy here and raining on and off all day. We didn't do a lot which was nice.

God has never been this real to me before. His plan never so evident in my life. Darrick and I believe that God wanted us in Hawaii for a specific reason. I am really out of my comfort zone here. No family, having to make new friends, find a new church, new culture. But I feel so at peace here.

When I think about what Christ did for me on this day it is beyong words. My brother Sam wrote something on his blog (http://www.samgutierrez.blogspot.com/) about how we often try to describe things that are to great for words. He is so right. It just moves me to tears and worship.

I read something someone wrote today that reminded me of a time when I was in college and struggling with Depression that I lost my faith. Which made me even more grateful for Christ and that He loved me even during that time when I turned my back on Him and wanted nothing to do with God. So many family members and friends were praying for me, at a time when I couldn't pray for myself. And I know those prayers saved my life.

I hope that today you have a chance to stop and think about what Good Friday is all about.

A fun-filled day

Our day started off early because we had to bring Darrick to the ship this morning. They left today for a dependants cruise to Maui. That is when the sailors can invite family and friends to ride onboard the ship and experience ship life. They have an age limit of 8 years old, so since the boys could not go, neither could I. So Darrick is exploring Maui and will be back Monday.

Today the boys and I went to the Zoo and beach with our neighborhood friends. We had such a good time. Because of traffic (and not Jenn's slow driving :) ) we got separated on the freeway. But we each had a cell phone and eventually found one another again. The Zoo was a lot of fun but it was hot today and humid. So at 1:00 we headed across the street to the beach.

It was a great beach day, the best one so far! The water was warm and I even got in and rode some waves with Micah, it was a blast! Micah is getting so good at riding the waves. I tried to take Jacob in the water but he just kept saying, "Don't like it Mommy!" We ate shave ice and soaked up the sun. It was so relaxing.

We all had pizza for dinner at our neighbors house and the kids continued to have a great time. I posted a picture of the kids and their new animal masks from the zoo. I personally do not like masks, they kind of freak me out and I think Micah looks like he was in the movie "The Planet of the Apes". Jacob can never get his on right and often is wearing it upside down or looking out through the mouth hole instead of the eyes.

We are looking forward to a lazy day tomorrow! Until then...

Help...we're being invaded!

Oh, the joys of living in a tropical environment!

Today as I was getting ready to do my pilates video, Micah says, "Hey Mom, there is a bug on the floor". Now Micah has a pretend cockroach that he likes to hide around the house and surprise us with so I thought it was that. Then he said, "It's legs are moving!" I looked at it more closely and realized it was real. The good thing is that it was on its back and not running around. The bad thing is that it was the size of my pinky finger and still moving. I have to admit I started to cry. Just the thought of getting near it gave me the chills. Most bugs do not bother me, but I cannot stand cockroaches! My first attempt to sweep it in a cup did not work because I could not get that close. So I put a glass over it and slid a magazine underneath and slid it all the way to the bathroom. I had Micah man the flusher and as soon as I dropped him in the toliet, Micah flushed him away. Even though I know he is gone, I have visions of him crawling back out while I am using the potty.

Then tonight as we were coming home from Bible Study a gecko ran in the door with us. He is currently staying in our laundry room and we cannot catch him. Darrick is leaving to go out to sea tomorrow and will not be back until Monday so I guess it will be up to me to get our house guest to leave. He checked a little while ago and couldn't find him. I hope he doesn't crawl in our bed!

So I posted pictures of our two guests below. Compare the size of the cockroach to the toy motorcycle! Let's hope we don't have anymore visitors anytime soon, unless they are human of course!

We live on an island, how hard can it be to find the beach?

This week all the schools here are on spring break. So we thought we would do some things with our friends who are usually in school. Since the weather was nice we thought it would be a good beach day. We packed up 2 moms, 5 kids, towels, lunch and a ton of sand toys and headed for Ko Olina Lagoons at 10 am. The trip went good until we got to the check in at the resort and they told us they were not letting any more people in the lagoon today since it was full because of spring break.

We weren't going to let that discourage us. We had seen signs on the way to Ko Olina for Barbers Point. I had heard it was really nice. "Great" we thought "We'll go there!" Pretty soon we were at a harbor for tug boats-not the beach. We tried again and ended up in an industrial park and asked someone changing a tire for directions. We made a another wrong turn and asked some people at a bus stop. We were not sure how accurate their directions were and stopped at a gas station.

We realized that we were going to some sort of beach on a navy base-but not Barbers Point. At this point the kids were fussy and we would of settled for a puddle for the kids to play in! We finally saw a sign for a beach but passed it twice. I told Micah to start praying that we would find a beach-any beach...how hard could it be? We live on an island!

After an hour and a half we finally made it to a beach. The kids had a great time, I posted their picture below. They played in the waves, in the sand and tried to body surf!

Thursday we are planning on going to the Zoo, let's hope that goes better!

Pilates for Dummies

First , thank you to everyone who has been leaving comments and for the encouraging notes and emails. You guys have a lot of wisdom and love for us!
Today was a pretty typical Monday, an exciting day filled with mountains of laundry and picking up the house.

We had to get up at 5:30 am and bring Darrick to the ship. We only have our minivan and Darrick usually rides his bike to work but today he had some uniforms he had to bring with him which makes it hard to steer so we all got up to bring him. I had a great idea that as soon as we got home I would take the boys in our bed and we could all go back to sleep. Well Jacob thought it was a funny game and kept flopping himself down on the pillows. Well of course, he missed, and ended up head butting me and giving me a fat lip. So we all got up.

I decided today to try a new workout video called "Pilates for Dummies". I have been interested in pilates and thought this would be a fool proof way to start. I'm happy to say I could follow it easily (does that mean I am a dummy?) But it was really challenging. Has anyone reading this tried these exercises? The focus is on your Powerhouse or middle stomach area. Well after some of the exercises I decided that after 2 kids my Powerhouse is more like a weak and Flab house. So hopefully these exercises will help. It was just so different because I am use to endless repitions and sweating and telling the lady on the video to please stop. But we only did about 6 reps of each exercise and the focus is on form.

I forgot to write yesterday that Darrick went outside to mow the lawn in the morning before church. He has a certain pair of lame-o velcro cheap shoes that we got at KMart for cheap that he wears when he mows the grass. He keeps them outside since they are dirty. Yesterday when he went to put them on he was surprised to find a frog hiding in his shoe! This is the second time that happened, but last time the frog peed in his shoe, which wasn't too pleasant. Man, don't you wish you lived in Hawaii?

Anuenue

Well, it is Sunday. For those of you who don't know, the name of the church we have been attending is called Anuenue Christian Church. Anuenue means rainbow in hawaiian. It was the 3rd church we tried here. We found it by looking up CRC in the phone book and Anuenue was the only one listed. Right away we were drawn to it. The members were very welcoming but we didn't feel like visitors-we felt like family-like we belonged there. The worship was great and the pastor was awesome.

We have been praying and felt this is where God wanted us. Then about a month ago the church announced they needed a lot of help with the children's ministry. Jenn talked to the leader and found out that she will begin full time school teaching in April and needs to have more help at church. We were amazed at God and how specific His timing can be. It humbled us to think that God had it planned out that we would come to this church at this specific time for this specific reason. The leader was so happy to hear about Jenn's past experience teaching and being the Children's Ministry Director at our past church.

Well today was a difficult day at church. Our current Pastor Hugo Venegas, announced that he would be leaving for Colorado in June to church plant. And the Youth Pastor is going with him. We believe as well as they do that this is God's calling and needs to be followed. But we were stunned. Why God have You led us to this church at this time that is going to be going through such great transition?

It is really hard for me(Jenn) to write about this. Today during his announcement, I felt the same way I did when God told me we were moving to Hawaii. God knows that if it was up to me, Darrick and I would had married and lived our whole lives in CA. But I stepped out in obedience, trusting in His plan for our lives. I felt myself today during the announcement, saying "No God, this isn't happening" I wanted to be part of an established church. Even though I have been a Christian most of my life I have never been called to such hard things before.

Once again Darrick and I feel humbled that God is using us in some way in this situation. We also feel that all the situations we went though at our old church were now a preparation for what He will have us do here. So will you please pray for us and that we will be obedient to how God wants to use us?

We also went on a date tonight. Two people from Darrick's ship, Rico and Steph (they are dating) watched the boys. We posted their picture below. This is the second time they watched the boys. The boys have a really good time with them and even cried tonight when they left.
