About a month ago we received the wonderful news that my brother Dave and his wife Laura are expecting their first baby in November! We are so excited and the boys pray for Auntie Laura and the baby in her tummy every day. I talked to Laura today for about an hour. It is so great having a sister, which is a totally new experience for me. I really enjoy talking with her. They had a doctor appt. yesterday and saw the baby on an untrasound. It was punching its arms and really looked like a baby. It made me think of our first ultrasound with Micah. It was such a miracle because you really don't see the signs of pregnancy yet because your tummy has not grown. And then all of the sudden you look on the screen and there is a little miracle that is growing inside of you!
Micah tried to ride his bike tonight for the first time without the training wheels. He did it in the grass pretty quickly. But he got frustrated on the sidewalk that he couldn't get it. He cried and told us he was frustrated. Micah is very determined and likes to do things right. I remember once when he tried to ride his scooter down a huge hill at the park. He ate it pretty bad at the end of the hill. When I got to him and asked him why was he crying? Was he hurt? He said he was crying because he didn't do it! So I'm sure after a few tries he will get this too!

Wedding stuff
I talked to my friend Becky today who is getting married on October 1st. It is so fun to hear about the plans she is making but it just reminded me of how much planning it takes to put on a wedding. This summer Darrick and I will celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary! We can hardly believe it.
We are also trying to figure out plans of when to come home and visit. It looks like the boys and I will be coming to California for about 2 months in the fall. Darrick will hopefully get his leave approved and be able to join us for some of the time.
It is cloudy today and we had rain this morning. The boys and I went to Walmart, which is always a fun time. On the way home we stopped at the mini mart on base. Micah got out on his side and I got Jacob out. We did our shopping and then went back to the car. Micah had left his door completly open and I didn't even check! I was so glad that we were on the base and no one even touched a thing. What a blessing!

Seeing new places
This morning my neighbor Lauren called me and said her boys were up early so she was wondering if we wanted to go out to breakfast and to the park. Since Darrick has duty today, I was glad to have something to do.
She took us to a place that her family loves! It is on Hickam Airforce base and is called Wright Bros. Cafe and Grill. It was awesome! There is outside dining pretty close to the water but the best part is that the Navy ships go right by when they go out to sea. We did not see any big ships but a few coast guards and a police ship went by. And the prices were cheap. We will definitly be taking our visitors there for breakfast.
It is so great to go out with Lauren because this is their second time stationed here and she knows about so many cool places on the island. And since she also has two boys the kids have fun together.
She then took us to Kaneohe, the most beautiful part of the island in my opinion, to the Marine Base. They were running flight ops so we were able to get out and watch the planes, which the boys thought was so cool. Then we went to a nice playground and had fun.
When we got home we went over to their house and had lunch. It was such a fun time.
Jacob missed his nap today and is feeling pretty grumpy so I think we will have a quiet night at home and get him to bed early!

Frog...part 2
The boys and I had a relaxing morning so I was able to call my mom and chat. She had some good news...my youngest brother Jeff is coming to Hawaii to visit us and the best part is that he will be here in about 2 weeks! We are so excited, he will be our second visitor! He will be staying with us for 2 weeks!
Darrick came home around 2 pm today so we were able to go over to the exchange and commissary and get some shopping done. We were invited to a BBQ tonight by our friend Sonya. We know Sonya from Darrick's ship he was stationed on in New Jersey. Over the years we lost contact with Sonya. About a week after we moved to Hawaii we saw Sonya at the exchange, we were so surprised. She is stationed at Pearl Harbor too but on a different ship.
When we got home tonight our big frog friend was chilling out in our yard again. We showed the boys and they were thrilled. We spent about a half hour outside, watching him and hopping with him around the yard. The boys got pretty brave and took turns touching its back. It was so neat. Maybe we have a new pet?

From Dogs to Frogs
Hello everyone! The pumpkin seeds have now grown into some hearty little plants. So this morning the boys and I transplanted them into a planter we bought and set them in a sunny place in the back yard. They both enjoyed watering them and putting some miracle grow on them.
Lately it seems like everyday the boys want to play "Dog". This either means that one of them is the dog and the other the owner or they are both dogs. Is this some weird way of telling me they want a pet? Anyways, they really play the part and I try to play along too. I pet them when them come near and talk to them even though all they do is pant or bark. Well today Micah was the dog and Jacob the owner (see picture below). So I was teaching Jacob how to teach his dog Bobo (That is what he named Micah) how to do tricks and then give him a reward. They thought this was so funny and played it all morning.
Tonight as I was getting ready to write this, Darrick went out to move the sprinkler. I soon heard him knocking on the window telling me to come outside quick. There before us in the yard was the biggest frog either of us had ever seen, it was huge! (We put his picture below) It is so cool to live in Hawaii!

Busy Weekend
We had such a busy weekend. We were so tired every night we just went to bed so I will catch you up!
On Friday we picked up Darrick up from being out to sea all week. They ended up getting off the ship late and the boys and I had to wait in the parking lot over an hour. Both the boys fell asleep which was great for the wait but not so good for bed time. We went to KMart to eat dinner at Little Ceaser's Pizza. They have a restaraunt inside KMart. Then we did some shopping. On the way to the car Micah was running and took a big fall in the parking lot and scrapped up his knees pretty bad. But they are healing nicely.
Saturday morning started with Pancakes! Then we cleaned the house and Darrick mowed the lawn. At noon Darrick had a soccer game against an undefeated team. The Hopper team played so good and ended up winning 3-1!
On the way to the soccer game I got a cell phone call from my dear friend Becky. She got engaged!!! Her fiance's name is Jim Peterson and is from Holland, Michigan. They will be getting married October 1st of this year!
Saturday night we had a double date planned with a married couple from church-Troy and Bow. I posted our picture below. They lead our Bible Study during the week. Troy is from Hawaii and Bow is from Thailand. We really like them and had a good time. We went to dinner at Black Angus (it is called Cattleman's here) and then saw a movie called "Fever Pitch". Aaron and his wife Brittney watched the boys for us. Aaron works for Darrick.
Sunday we went to church and our friend Steph joined us again. I observed in the children's class because I will be teaching next week. After church we had lunch and then Steph took me out for a Girl's Afternoon Out! I really needed it and we had so much fun. We went and got pedicures and then went to see a movie caleed "Beauty Shop". My toes are so cute, with red polish and a Hawaiian flower design on them.
After I dropped Steph off at the barracks I went home and we had dinner and relaxed. We had so much to do and loved it all. Darrick is in port this week and we look forward to him coming home every night this week!

A Fun Day with Friends
Today we went to the Sea Life Park with our neighbors across the street, Lauren, Charlie and Alex. We all have season passes and thought they boys would enjoy playing together. We all loaded into their van and stopped at Jamba Juice for smoothies. Then we drove to the Sea Life park. It was a really warm day but we had a great time. We fed the sea turtles and played on the pirate toy structure. We had a picnic lunch and then fed the sea lions. We left in the early afternoon and made it home before traffic. It was so great to hang out with someone who had two boys close in age. I posted a picture of all the boys below!
In the afternoon the boys played out front in a little pool we bought. They love splashing in the water and even ran through some sprinklers.
We are excited for Darrick to come home tomorrow and to spend some time together as a family this weekend!

And the answer is...
Thank you to everyone who participated in my Jenn trivia game. It was so fun to read what people thought and why they picked the answer they did.
The false answer is...#4 I sleepwalk and have since I was little. My mom and dad were right that once They did find me trying to pee in the toy box in the middle of the night but that was an isolated incident!
#1 My poor nose! Yes I came out of the womb with my nose smashed to one side, and the dr. said I would need plastic surgery. They decided that I sucked my thumb in the womb and pulled my nose to the side. But it straightened out on its own although Darrick still thinks it is a little crooked!
#2 My parents did not give me a middle name because my dad thought my name "Jennifer Gutierrez" was long enough already-hey, how was he to know that someday my last name would be Hays!
#3 Yes, strange but true, I am terrified of sloths. I can't even look at a picture of one, they just gross me out. I get teased a lot about this because they are so slow and could never get me. When I taught school my students would hide pictures of sloths around our classroom and thought it was so funny when I found one.
#5 A word to the wise: never jump on a moving treadmill and think that you can instantly start running the speed it is at, you can't and I proved that. I have a circle scar on each knee from being rubbed on the concrete, it was so painful!
#6 Me and my friend Becky decided it would be so cool to get our naval's pierced. So we got her older brother to take us to South Dakota to do it. We looked in the phone book and found Snake and his prices were the cheapest (thinking back now-that probably wasn't a good thing) It ended up being at his house and on the door it said "The no pants ranch" I'm still confused why we went thorough with it. It was in a back room in his house. Good thing her brother was with us! Anyways, I keep it for years, until I got pregnant. Now I have a funny scar because my pregnancies stretched it out!
This was fun...maybe I will do another one but for Darrick. He is out to sea so I can put whatever I want...

Trivia
We had a pretty typical day and nothing exciting. A few weeks ago my brother Sam posted a trivia game about himself so I thought I would try that today. I will post 6 things about me, Jenn, and you have to guess which one I made up! Have fun seeing how well you know me and post your guess below!
1. When I was born my nose was smashed to one side of my face and the dr. said I would need plastic surgery to correct it.
2. I do not have a middle name.
3. I am so afraid of sloths I cannot even look at a picture of one!
4. I sleepwalk and have since I was little.
5. I once jumped on a moving treadmill and was flung onto the ground and was rubbed back and forth until my friend turned it off.
6. In college I had my naval pierced by a guy named Snake at the "No Pants Ranch"

Walking
This morning started out early because we had to bring Darrick to the ship this morning, he is out to sea this week again and will return on Friday. Even thought it is hard to roll out of bed at 5:30 am, I love to wake up to Darrick rubbing my back and whispering "Time to get up". And I really love the morning. There is just something about being up at the start of a brand new day-it is so fresh.
After breakfast I decided to go for a walk. I have been slacking off on my exercising for the last month and decided to get back into it today. I love walking and so over a year ago we bought a double exercise stroller.
We start from our house and walk to the gate guard and leave the base. We walk past the Lehua Elementary School and onto the bike path. From there it gets interesting. Pearl City is not the greatest city or most beautiful. We walk past some run down apartments and then the freeway. Then we get to some sort of fields filled with water. I am not sure what they are growing. Then we walk through an industrial park and end up by the shore. At this point I turn around and walk home. Once I walked further and there were a lot of homeless people and about 30 or more stray cats. There are a lot of people on the path. There seems to be 3 groups, moms with strollers, military in black shorts with tan t-shirts or elderly asian people who are so friendly and nice. They love to wave to the boys and often ask me if they are twins.
Until tomorrow...

Hello everyone it is me Darrick again. I was home for the weekend. We had a busy day today. We went to Church, the mall food court, the mall, Toys R Us and Dave's Ice Cream.
At Church today there was a band called the Red Letter Band. They are from the North Shore and were really good. We bought their CD for $5. They are going to go to San Diego and tour at Church's down there. Pastor Hugo is in Colorado this week so we had Pastor Jim preach and it was the first time we heard him. He was very good. Only thing is he is leaving to go to Colorado as well.
We went to the mall today to get our new Verizon cell phones. Now I can call Jenn from where ever I am, excluding overseas, and talk as long as we want. While I was getting the cell phones Jenn and the boys watch a Japanese dance that was being performed in the middle of the mall. Micah and Jacob really like the drums. Jenn liked the dancers. We went to Toys R Us to get those signs you put out so cars will know that kids are playing near by and will hopefully slow down. We also got Micah a little Batman body board because he is pretty good a body surfing and that will only help him. I will be looking forward to going to the beach to see him.
When we got home Micah and I went for a bike ride and Jenn and Jacob came behind with the stroller. Micah does really good on his bike and is fast but he says he is not ready to try removing the training wheels. I think he could totally do it is he would let us take them off.
After bike riding we ate dinner and ate some cookies. Then we played a game as a family and the boys are in bed now.
Well that was our Sunday a nice but busy day. Until next time.
Peace
Darrick

Tuggy
As you can see from the photo posted below, Tuggy has joined our family. Our neighbors brought him over to us yesterday afternoon and the boys were so surprised and excited. This morning after we picked up Darrick from the ship we went to breakfast at Denny's. Then we went to Home Depot to buy some sand for Tuggy! The boys played in him until lunch time.
After lunch we went to Darrick's soccer game. The Hopper team was matched against the best team and after a hard game it ended tied 1-1! Then we went into shoot outs and lost.
When we got home Darrick mowed the lawn, while I cleaned out the van and the boys played in Tuggy. The boys each took a turn in "time out" for dumping sand on their brother's head and we went over the sand box rules again. The we had "The Hays Family Car Wash" as Micah called it. Really we all just helped wash the minivan-and it was a good way to get all the sand off the boys.
After dinner and baths we are all feeling pretty tired tonight and looking forward to a good night sleep!

One reason I love the Navy
It has been about 5 years since we have lived on a military base. We lived on the base in New Jersey and loved it and had such dear friends that we still keep in touch with. It feels a lot like college to me, because everyone is going through the same thing together.
We have been here 3 1/2 months now and it is starting to feel like home. And one thing that I love about the Navy is the BBQ's. There doesn't have to be a reason, people in the Navy love to have BBQ's! It is not like at home where it is mostly family and a few friends because hardly anyone has family here. It is a bunch of people getting together, and having fun. Of course there are all different kinds of BBQ's. Now that we have a family we don't go to the wild BBQ's. But there is some unwritten rule that if you get invited you need to show up, Darrick says it helps things go better at work.
Tonight our neighbors invited us over for a BBQ. Just the boys and I went. Darrick is back but he has duty today so we can't see him until tomorrow. We had so much fun. I really love our neighbors. God truly blessed us with great people to live by. We come from all over the USA but we all have a common bond, the Navy. We laughed and talked and ate yummy food. The kids played and it is just a real sense of family and support for one another.
I think it is hatching time for the geckos because there are baby geckos everywhere and the boys love it! Tonight after the BBQ Micah was able to catch one, they are a lot slower then the adults. He loved it and talked to it (Jacob pulled its tail off on accident) and then set it free to find its parents he said. I posted a picture below.

Everything's back to normal
I am happy to report that I think our van is back to normal. The boys and I went to Walmart in the afternoon and the McDonald's for dinner and the van was good, just like normal. I am so happy!
I spent the morning doing laundry and cleaning the bathrooms, exciting I know, but it had to be done. In the afternoon we had oceanic time warner come to hook up our new digital phone. We now have a combo package and pay one bill for cable, internet and now phone.
Today is trash day for us. Trash Day has been an interesting experince. All my life no matter where I have lived the trash truck picks up your trash on your trash day. Well not in Hawaii. You put your trash out on your day but they pick it up when they get to it. So you just leave it out until it is empty. It could be on your day or the next day. If it is a few days and people pull their cans back to their house they will come and look in your can and if it is full they will bring it to the truck and empty it.
I am not sure why it is that way. Someone told me, "What's the hurry? It will still be there waiting, it's not going anywhere!" But we have learned to relax and embrace this Hawaiian philosophy.
The boys are adapting in subtle ways too. Sometimes Micah will say "Mahalo" instead of Thank you. Flip flops are called slippers here and the boys use the word slipper all the time. Everyone takes off their shoes to enter a house and the boys do that right away now when we enter someone's house. That is one thing that I appreciate. The time warner guys took off their shoes today and it is so nice.
