Space Derby

Tuesday night the Cub Scouts held their annual Space Derby. Since Micah is a Tiger and in his first year of scouting it was all new to us. We received our kit and I am so glad that Darrick was here to help Micah build it. The leaders told the parents to help as little as we can so it was pretty cute because the Tigers were mostly flying rectangles because it was too much sanding to get it in a rocket shape.



It is propelled by twisting rubberbands connected to a propeller. You could do anywhere from 1-100 spins. Many of the boys who did 100 lost because their rocket either fell off or flipped and got caught in the line. And if you twisted it the wrong way it went backwards.







Micah decided that he would do 25 spins and named his rocket "Blue Bullet". He won his first race but lost the second so he was eliminated.





But we were surprised at the end when Micah was awarded the ribbon for best paint job! He was so proud. Darrick had duty so he missed it all but it was quite an adventure!

When our friends Jennifer and Brayden returned from visiting Texas, their home state, they brought us back there awesome shirts! Hays, is the name of a store in their area. We were so surprised, thanks again Jennifer!

I also included some new pictures of Luke Skywalker. He is getting bigger and is now 3 months old. We taught him this weekend how to sit. He gets a little doggy treat. He is so funny because he will come up to you, sit and look at you like "where is my treat?" And last night Darrick was eating some ice cream and Luke came up to him and sat and waited for some, but of course Darrick did not share. But when Darrick left the room, Luke had climbed from the couch which was reclined to the coffee table and started chowing down on the ice cream. Darrick caught him. I think they both were disappointed that that was the end of their treat.

Getting our outside in order

Darrick and I spent most of the day getting our outdoors in order.

We started off with the lawn, I mowed, while Darrick edged. Then we had to clean out the carport. We had been putting all our boxes in there so we had to break them down, sweep it all out and then put the bikes back in.


Next we moved to our outdoor storage and our shed. We took everything out and put all Darrick's "stuff" in the outdoor storage, it is now like his own mini garage. Then we put other stuff like luggage and holiday decorations in the shed.

Darrick put the boys outdoor play structure together and I swept our driveway and gutter. We were so dirty and exhausted when we were done. Darrick put the boys structure by a plumeria tree, which they love! He put a rope with knots to climb and a bucket attached to a rope they can put things in and pull them up. I also put some pictures of the view from our lanai today-it was beautiful!

We're Back Online!

We finally are back online! Yahoo! The cable guy came and installed it this week but it was not working for a few days but Darrick came home this weekend from being out to sea all week and he fixed it. Well actually he discovered it was just unplugged...opps, I guess I should have checked that first. So much has happened I will list some of the highlights:

*We passed our final inspection on our old house and had to pay 0 fines!!!

*We are almost totally unpacked.

*Darrick has been going out to sea during the week and coming home on the weekends.

*The boys and I have been at the beach a few times every week.

*Darrick spent 3 days last weekend putting together a metal shed for our extra stuff.

*Last Saturday Darrick and I went to the Khaki Ball on a Sunset Dinner Cruise in Waikiki.



*Last Sunday we attended a dinner at our church for married couples and the One Love ministry-it was super fun.

*Luke, our puppy, is really growing and developed a terrible habit of biting us hard. We found a site on the internet that addressed this and told us how important the skill of not biting is and usually they learn it from their mother. You yelp the first two times he does it and if he does it a third you flip him on his back, growl and say "no bite" aqnd hold him there until he relaxes which means he submits to you. After a few times Luke got it and was a totally different puppy today! It was amazing.

*The Blue Angels are here, in Hawaii, and have not been here since 1994. We went today to see the airshow. It was free but while we were standing in line someone gave us 5 wristbands, which cost money, to sit in the grandstands. Micah had his friend JJ with him. It was so incredible!

Done...finally!

Right now I am sitting at my kitchen table, looking at the ocean, enjoying the breeze and I am completely exhausted! Things have not worked out as we planned with Darrick's work. He did not get off of work until 9 pm last night, he has duty today and he leaves Monday to go underway for a week.

Wednesday is our final inspection of our Pearl City House. You can pay $315.00 and they will clean it for you or you can do it yourself. Darrick and I agreed that we could totally do it together and get it all done between the 2 of us. Well like I said before, it didn't work out that way (go navy!) and I had to do it all. And you have to clean every inch.

Well today, for 6 hours, I finished it up. I shampooed all the carpets, cleaned the laundry room, mowed the back yard, power washed the outside of the house and carport and yes, cleaned out the trashcan, yuck.

Darrick offered to do it tomorrow after he gets off duty but I would rather be with him on his last day. It's funny how when you have to do things you just do them. I have never shampooed a carpet before but I figured it out and did a good job. The boys, and Luke, were amazing and played outside nicely while I worked.

And even though I am exhausted, and boxes surround me that need to be unpacked, I feel good for working so hard and doing something nice for my husband. I know he will appreciate it!

We're Back!

Well it has almost been a week now and things are finally starting to settle down. We are not getting our tv and internet set up until October 9-that was the earliest appt. they had! But we discovered the beach cafe across the street has a signal that we can pick up on with our laptop.

The move has fallen a lot on my shoulders because work has been really bad for Darrick and things kept coming up. It started last Friday when something came up at work and he could not pick up the uhaul. Thankfully my friend Jocelyn said she would help me. It was the biggest truck they had and Jocelyn said she would drive it for me-Jocelyn you are my HERO!

Saturday we had a bunch of people from church came to help us pack up. It went really well.

So this week I have been unpacking and cleaning our old house. We have basic things set up in our "Beach House" (as we call it) like beds, tables, chairs, kitchen. So now the unpacking of the little stuff starts and finding places for all of it.

Yesterday we took Luke to the vet for his first appt. He got a shot but the vet was so good with him. She put dog treats on the table and while he ate them up she gave him his shot and he didn't even notice. Luke now weighs 3 lbs.!

It has been really nice not having to drive Micah to school everyday. We can walk to school in 10 minutes and it takes us 1 minute to drive there.

A few afternoons we went down to the beach and the boys played in the water. And we have been to the cafe for some ice cream.

Reggie and Shelley Norman were on vacation here this week and we were able to visit with them on Wednesday.

Micah had his first pack meeting with all the cub scouts in the school. He got his first badge and Darrick was there to put it on him. Micah was so proud.

Well I think that about sums up the past week. I better get back to unpacking!

Moving Day!

Today is moving day! We will be out of touch for a few days until everything gets hooked up again, but you can always reach us on our cell phones!

Lease Signing Day

Today was Lease signing day for our new house!

We also did a walk through of our home. Most everything looked really good. They put all new laminate floors in, new ceiling fans, all new stuff in one bathroom, new washer and dryer, new fridge, new cabinets and counter tops and a new stove. We were super excited.

There was one thing that was really odd. Our new dishwasher is next to a set of drawers in the shape of an "L". The drawers are new and have new handles on them. Well whoever planned it out was not quite thinking because you can only open the dishwasher about 1/4 of the way open because the handles on the cabinets block it. We are interested in how they are going to fix that.

We also noticed some pretty large ants trying to invade our home and a few geckos have already moved in.

But we got a great breeze going through the house with the windows open and we could see the ocean from our living room! One thing I really like is that is has a lot of windows so it is much lighter then our house now. After we get moved in we will post some pictures.

I was also really excited because I bought something really cool from Craig's list. It is an older buffet. It has two nice drawers and three cupboards. It is dark green right now but I plan on painting it. It was only $50.00 and will look great in our new house!

So Embarrassing!

Have you ever done something so embarrassing that afterwards you wanted to just crawl in a hole and hide? Well that happened to me today.

We had to go to a Chief's function called Meet and Greet. All the Chiefs and soon to be Chiefs come and bring their families and we had a BBQ.

So I was sitting next to this lady, talking to her and I noticed an icky, medium sized, black hair stuck on her sleeve. I watched it for a while and it was bugging me. So when she turned to talk to someone else I knew it was my chance to remove it without her noticing. So I grabbed it gently and pulled.

She turned around and said "Ouch, what are you doing?" I told her about the gross hair and she looked and said it was attached to her arm not the shirt! Oh man. Thankfully she laughed so I laughed too but what an embarrassing moment!

Craig's List

Has anyone out there tried Craig's List? I would describe it as an online yard sale. When you look up stuff it is best to look in your local area. It has so many different catagories. Then you contact the seller and you pay and pick it up.

There are some things in our house that are just not going to fit in our new house so we thought we would try it. And so far today we have made $75.00! We put a few different items and two have sold! We sold a stereo for $50.00 and a collection of Mr. Potato Toys with accessories for $25.00!

This could become addicting! I find myself looking around the house saying, "I could sell that and that and that!" Some of the items we were just going to give to the Goodwill so we are glad we tried this!

Homecoming Day!!!

Today is the day!

It is 5 am here and I can't sleep anymore! I have been tossing and turning since about 3 am but told myself I have to stay in bed until 5. So as soon as it turned 5:00 I jumped out of bed and took a nice relaxing bath. I decided that I should shave my legs since I have not shaved them since Darrick left. Just kidding-I live in Hawaii, that would never work. But I did shave my legs.

The boys and dogs are still sleeping and I am enjoying some quiet before the day starts. I worked so hard yesterday getting everything ready and now the house and me and the boys are sparkling from top to bottom.

Darrick emailed me and the ship will be pierside at 10 am. We are going to watch the ship pull through the channel at Hickam so we have to be there at 9 am. Darrick also told me that this ship does things differently. Usually the families wait on the pier and the sailors come off the ship and find us. Well the Lake Erie has the families come on the ship and we have to find our sailor, and they all wear the same uniforms. Darrick told me where he will be standing so I am interested to see how it all goes!

Goodbye St. Andre Family

Tonight was the last time we got to spend time with our dear friends, the St. Andre family. Bright and early, 4:30 am, they are flying out to their new duty station in California. This afternoon they borrowed our van, since we have the stow-n-go seating so they could bring Osa, their dog, and her crate to the airport. We shared pizza for dinner and then said our tearful goodbyes. It is one of the worst feelings I know. The Navy friends we have made are so dear to us, it is like saying goodbye to our family. We love you guys so much and will miss you even more!

3 Days and Counting!

Well it started yesterday. Everytime Darrick leaves or comes home the boys have a, let's call it, adjustment period. In basic terms everything falls apart and they do things that are unusual for them. I believe it is because of the change that is coming and they are not sure how to feel and they act out. They whine, do naughty things, cry for no reason and are tired. It has been a long two days but at least there is Darrick at the end of the tunnel!

Some people asked about Lulu. We still have Lulu and love her very much. Yesterday she did a lot of sniffing but seemed ok. Today was different. She would not eat her dog food at all and she seemed bothered by Luke. I hope it is just an adjustment period. Luke is interested in Lulu and they sat by each other once. The boys named him Luke after Luke Skywalker from Star Wars.

We have been giving Lulu tons of extra attention incase she is feeling left out.

We lost Luke two times under the couch today. His tag jingles when he walks so that helps us find him. House training is going good. I caught some cute moments of the boys and Luke. Enjoy!

Our new puppy

We got a new puppy! He is a miniature pinscher, 6 weeks old and we named him Luke.

So Gross!

It was really cooling off nicely this evening so I thought I would mow the backyard before dinner. The grass was a little longer then usual because I didn't mow it on Saturday like I usually do.

Everything was going along fine and I was almost done and I heard this loud THUNK noise and I saw something go flying to my left. My first thought was that it was one of Lulu's dog bone toy things see chews on but as I continued to examine it, from a far distance, I thought I saw blood. Then I started to panic and try to think what it was, but I didn't know. So I had to get closer.

I then saw that it was a huge frog. It's body had been ripped open by the blade and its guts were all over. There was some wierd goo oozing out of it mouth...could I wait 7 days and leave it for Darrick to clean up? No that wouldn't work-either Lulu would try to eat it or it would get maggots and flies-gross.

So I called the boys and asked them to bring a trash bag. I told them something bad had happened while I was mowing the lawn and they were like "What is it? What is it?" I told them the lawnmower got a frog and pointed in the direction it landed. They ran over and right away Micah says, "That's cool!" "No it's not" I said, "It's sad" and Micah said "Oh yeah". Jacob didn't get to close. So Micah held the bag while I scooped it up but I just couldn't do it so Micah said he could scoop it if I hold the bag. So that is what we did. Thank goodness for Micah!

Who knew?

When Micah was in kindergarten at Lehua he was always at the top of his class and often complained about why he had to do this stuff because he already knew it.

So when we moved him to Iroquois Point Elementary we liked the fact that they got higher scores in testing and they had a program for gifted and talented. So at the start of the year they said that parents could fill out a form if they would like their child tested. I talked to Mrs. Hudson about her thoughts and she said that she had noticed Micah was ahead of the others in the class and said she would endorse him being tested.

This is the first year that the school is opening up the program to K, 1 and 2 grades.

So for 3 days Micah was pulled out of class, by Mrs. Jennifer Gutierrez, and given four different types of tests. We got the results this week and Micah was accepted into the program. When I talked to Mrs. Gutierrez she said that they measure his scores with national scores of other kids who are the same age down to the the exact month. Your scores could either place you in the Gifted and Talented Range or Enrichment (lower). Well Micah scored in the Gifted and Talented.

There are 2 second graders and 3 first graders who made it into the program. So two times a week from 8:15-9:30 Micah goes to class in a different classroom with the other four kids and has class with Mrs. Gutierrez.

Feeding the Homeless

Tonight we had an opportunity along with a few other mini churches to help out at a Homeless Shelter. Our group was assigned to cook the main dish which everyone decided should be Shoyu Chicken. That sounded great except that I had no idea how to make it.

So Susan Ching said that I could come over and make it with her. It was really easy and turned out great!

We were allowed to bring kids 5 and up so Micah could go but Jacob stayed with Margaret. Micah served the salad and did a really good job. Almost all the people there were from Micronasia. We were able to sit and talk with them after we served the food, it was very nice.

After we served Mike and Susan took me into a Philipino bakery to get a dessert. I decided to try butter mochi. I was looking at all the desserts and many had unusual names. Then I saw some cakes and asked Susan what a Mo-cha cake was, was it a cake made out of mochi flour instead of regular flour. She looked at me puzzled and pointed out to me that it was a Mocha flavored cake. Boy was I embarrassed. We got a good laugh!

And then there was one...

Today the wierdest thing happened when we got up 3 of our fish were dead. Jacob's, Darrick's and mine (sorry Darrick). Now I just looked in the fish tank and 2 more were dead. There is only 1 fish left. I wonder if they all got some crazy disease or something. I think we will wait and not get any more fish until after we move at the end of September.

This afternoon I took Micah, Jacob and Loretta to see "Artic Tale". I heard it was a lot like "March of the Penguins" which we never saw. I read the review on Plugged In Online. If you haven't been to their site it is awesome. They review movies and break them down into categories like sexual content, language, spiritual, etc. and tell you exactly what you will see.

Anyways it was good-I mean it wasn't action packed but it held the kids interest but I think if it was any longer I would of lost them-plus the popcorn, fruit punch and sour gummi worms helped.

It was funny because there was only one other family with kids in there and the rest was all older, kidless, couples. I tried to keep the kids quiet but they would yell out "What is the mommy doing?" "Miss Jenn I don't like walruses!" or "Walruses have big teeth!" you know things like that.

But my favorite part of the outing was when we got out of the car and Jacob grabbed Loretta's hand, kissed her right on the lips and said "Loretta, I'm going to marry you, BUT Deja is going to be my girlfriend!" Uh oh, sounds like trouble in the future. Darrick when you get home you and Jacob need a Father to Son talk!

Happy Birthday Chief Hays!

That's right, today is Darrick's Birthday! I doubt he will get to celebrate much but we will have cake and presents when he gets home! This picture is Darrick and his fellow Chiefs of the USS Lake Erie.

Quick Flossie update

At 7 pm tonight Flossie was 102 miles from the south of the Big Island.

It is expected to be 180 miles south of Oahu tomorrow afternoon. We never got any rain today but some pretty good gusts of wind. Car covers were blowing off, trashcans blown over and our trampoline safetly net got ripped. We will see what tomorrow brings...

On a side note there is a teacher named Jennifer Gutierrez at Micah's new school. I talked to her and she said that is her married name. She is doing some special testing with Micah this week and she said he is the only one who can remember her last name!

New Ring and Eggs

Some of you emailed me and asked to see a picture of my new wedding ring. It is very simple with 5 diamonds. It is really beautiful and I love it, thanks again Honey! The other day we also found 2 gecko eggs. Jacob wants to see if they will hatch so we have them in a bowl and are watching them. We have found other ones before but they always got crushed by curious little fingers. And it is 10:30 am and the sky is clear and blue but off and on we get strong gusts of wind.

Hurricane Flossie

If you have been watching the news you probably heard that Hurricane Flossie is heading for the big island and is expecting to have its biggest impact Tuesday afternoon around 3 pm Hawaii time.

We are not sure what the effect will be on our island of Oahu. Right now it is windy here and raining off and on. Hopefully that will be all that happens to us. I went out and bought extra water just incase and found out where the nearest shelter is in case we have to leave.

The news said if it moves 1 degress north it will hit the islands but so far so good!

10 years and still going strong!

Happy Anniversary to us! Yes, 10 years ago today Darrick and I were married. In the past 3 years Darrick has been deployed everytime our Anniversary rolls around. But one thing I have learned as a Navy Wife is that a date is just a number on the calendar and we can celebrate when he comes home.

Once again Darrick remembered, he has never once forgotten, and sent me a beautiful arrangement of flowers and a new wedding ring. He gets his present from me when he gets home :)

Darrick, I can not even describe how deep my love for you is. When we got married I loved you but it was not even close to the love I have for you now after being married 10 years. You are a wonderful man, so kind and patient. You love me and the boys with all your heart. When you are gone there is a hole in our family and we don't feel complete. Thank you for all you do for us and our country. I am so proud you and love you so much.

Never seen this before...

Yesterday after school I was looking through Micah's papers and found this book with a really cute dog on it wearing a lei. But I was very surprised when I read the title "Ilio shows you what

to do if you find ammo" yes, you read it right...AMMO!
The first step is RECOGNIZE-Ilio sees old ammo! Then RETREAT-Don't touch it! Ilio turns and follows his tracks away from the danger.

Third is REPORT-Ilio, with help from an adult, calls 911 and describes what he found and where he found it.

Fourth page says- Ilio has saved the day! He remembered the 3Rs of explosives safety: Recognize, Retreat, Report. Experts carefully remove the ammo. We haven't found any ammo yet, but now if we do, we know what to do!

Aloha Dog Taining Inc.

Just to refresh your memory at the end of April we adopted Lulu, our dog, from the Humane Society. She is a great dog but as time has passed we have noticed two major issues with her. The first is that she is super hard to walk. She is very strong and has so much energy that she pulls really hard. The second is that she will not come when called she just runs off and we can't get her back.

So we called Heather at Aloha Dog Training and talked to her about Lulu. She thought that we would benefit from a private lesson instead of 8 weeks of group lessons because we wanted to address two specific issues.

So yesterday afternoon was our appointment. One thing I really liked is that she believes in a lot of praise and touching the dog and making the training fun instead of mean voices and discipline.

We first worked with having Lulu on a very long leash where she could roam a little. We worked on keeping her in a certain area . We said "stay here" and when she went too far we jerked the leash once to pull her back. She really started to get it. We also worked on teaching her to heel. Which was much harder but she started to get it.

She recommended that we not take Lulu on walks for about a month and just practice these techniques with her.

I feel like I learned so much too, it was definitly worth it!
